Stray / Kitten Rescue Intake Policy & Procedure

Defintion: Rescuer – the person who found the stray cat and is seeking to put the cat up for adoption through PACT.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Cats / kittens must be born to a person who is actively performing Trap-Neuter-Return

  • Kittens born to feral/stray cats
    • PACT will not approve intake of feral kittens 10 weeks of age or older. PACT recommends TNR for feral kittens over the age of 10 weeks.
    • If the kittens are feral and under the age of 8-9 weeks, the rescuer must agree to socialize the kittens as a condition of intake to PACT's adoption program.  More tips for socialization.
    • If the mom cat is feral (wild, undomesticated -- does not allow human contact), she must be TNR'd at the Rescuer's expense before PACT agrees to the intake of her kitten(s).   See "Friendly Strays" above if the mom cat is a friendly stray.

Policy & Process for Eligible Cats/Kittens

  1. The Rescuer agrees to:
    • provide a temporary foster home for the cat
    • provide a safe environment
    • provide fresh food, water and TLC daily
    • keep the cat strictly indoors, separated from other animals in the household
    • transport the cat to & from the PACT veterinarian for required procedures OR have the cat vetted to PACT's requirements at Rescuer's expense
    • not to give away or transfer the cat to another home, if a PACT veterinarian is used

  2. Rescuer sends an email to PACT to request intake approval.   Tell us about the cat/kitten(s) you have found, and provide your name, address and phone number.

  3. After approval has been granted, a PACT management team member will request that the Rescuer come to our PETsMART Schaumburg location to complete a Feline Foster Care Contract (only if Rescuer wants to take the cat to a PACT veterinarian).

    • Once we have a signed Feline Foster Care Contract, we will be in contact regarding our veterinary procedures.

If the Rescuer agrees to the policy & process above, email us for approval to place the cat/kittens up for adoption through PACT.  Be sure to tell us:

  • about the cat/kitten(s) you have found, including name, description, gender and approximate age, if known
  • your name, address and phone number
  • if you have taken the cat to your veterinarian, have their records faxed to PACT at 630-497-1672
    • be sure to include your name, the cat's name and how we can reach you on the fax cover page
    • ask your veterinary hospital send us the cat's actual records -- like a human's "chart" in a hospital -- not your copy of the paid invoice
