Get Started with TNR
Step One:
Educate Yourself
-
If you're new to feral cats and TNR,
Alley Cat Allies, the
national feral cat resource, will soon be at the top of your "bookmark" list.
We encourage newcomers start by reading their FAQs and
ours. -
Download and review our
TNR Checklist, a step-by-step guide
to help you every step of the way. -
Visit our Trapping
FAQs. -
View Alley Cat Allies'
instructional online videos.
Step Two:
Make an appointment with a veterinarian
Once you have a plan in mind, decide where you will seek veterinary care.
Your options are:
-
Visit your own veterinarian, if s/he agrees to
work with a feral cat.
-
Contact a veterinarian who provides low-cost
feral sterilizations to the public.
Step Three:
Get one trap for each cat
-
PACT loans humane box traps for 2 weeks
for a refundable $40 deposit per trap.
-
Borrow a trap from
your town. If your town is
not listed, call the police or public works department to ask about
trap loans. If your town has traps available, call us at the number above
and ask that we update our list.
-
Rent one from
Pioneer
Feed & Supply in Villa Park, IL
at
118 South Villa Avenue. Phone:
(630) 832-0815
Step Four:
Implement your TNR Plan
-
Using our
TNR Checklist, start to manage your
feral colony today! Each female you sterilize will bring 12-16 fewer
unwanted kittens into the world each year from that female alone. Female
kittens can start to reproduce as early as 4 months of age. Each male
you sterilize will impregnate dozens fewer females, and will be less likely to
contract deadly diseases or suffer injuries in fights over territory.
-
Socialize feral kittens under the age of 10 weeks for adoption placement.
-
Rescue friendly
strays from feral colonies for adoption placement through PACT Humane
Society.
