Trapping FAQs

How do I get food & water in the trap?

Do not give food to the cat the night prior to surgery.  Cats will be going under a general anaesthetic and need to have an empty stomach.  Water should be provided at all times while the cat is not in transport.

Set up the area by lining the ground with a plastic sheet or tarp.  Place several sheets of newspaper on top of the trap.  Place the trap on the newspaper.
Make sure that all entrances to the room are closed.

Keeping a close watch on the cat, but avoiding direct eye contact (a sign of aggression), slowly open the trap slightly to allow shallow plastic bowls to be inserted.  Quickly close the trap door when finished.

Mission accomplished!

Before transporting the cat to a veterinarian, use an unbent wire hangar to spill the water out onto the newspaper.

After surgery, an unbent wire hangar may be used to slowly upright overturned bowls.

Use a sports bottle to fill the water bowl.

To provide food after surgery, either slide the bowls in already containing food, or drop the food in through the trap.  A large funnel may also come in handy.

A device called a "catacomb" may prove invaluable.  This one was made by a handy volunteer.  It has small spaces between the teeth of the comb that allow it to be inserted into the trap.  The ends of the teeth have rounded edges.
The trap's cover has been removed to illustrate the desired insertion point.  Insert the catacomb all the way to the ground.  Be sure to move slowly while doing this, so the cat does not become frightened.
Once the catacomb has been inserted, the trap door may be opened to put down fresh food & water bowls.
