Starting the Process

If you are interested in adopting an animal from PACT, a PACT Adoption Counselor will give you an application to complete.  After completing the application, which takes about 20 minutes, together you will discuss the contents of the application, your lifestyle, and the basic care requirements of the animal.  It is the Adoption Counselor’s responsibility to determine if the adoption is in the best interest of the animal you’re interested in adopting  based on that animal’s history and specific needs.   It is important to remember that our priority is the well being of the animal.

We encourage you and your family to ask questions throughout the interview process; your Adoption Counselor will answer any questions you may have.  The adoption application process takes no less than one hour.  Upon approval of the application, you will go through the PACT Adoption Contract with the Adoption Counselor, and take your new friend home!

Requirements for Adoption Application process:

  • All family members must be present to meet with the Adoption Counselor.
  • If you are currently renting, we require a copy of your lease so that we can verify that your landlord or association allows pets.
  • All applicants will need to present a valid driver’s license or another form of identification.

PACT Adoption Counselors are extensively trained and each adoption takes no less than 1 hour.  Adoption Counselors are trained to work with the public and to educate them on animal behavior issues, so our “refusal rate” is very low.  We accept that people may have made mistakes in the past and we help provide resources and information for the future.   Approved adopters take the animals home on the same day as adoption application.

Return requests are extremely rare (about 3%) because PACT Adoption Counselors work diligently to carefully match the needs of each animal with the needs of the adopter/adoptive family and because of the post-adoption follow-up. However, if for some reason, after many efforts with the adopter, if the adoption does not work out, PACT will always take our animal back.

Among other important provisions, our Adoption Contract states that cat(s) will:

  • not be declawed after adoption
  • remain strictly indoors
  • be returned to PACT -- not any other third party or organization -- if adopter no longer wishes to have the animal, or can no longer care for him/her
  • be provided regular ongoing veterinary care.
