Owner Give-Ups
Before requesting intake, we ask owners to ask themselves, "Have I done right by my cat?" Also consider the adoptability of your cat. We don't have people beating down our doors asking to adopt a 12-year old cat with diabetes, or a cat that urinates all over the house (when medical and environmental reasons have been eliminated). Also, because there are not enough homes for every animal, we encourage people to keep their animals and work through whatever issues may exist. We will ask the reason why you're giving up the cat, and what steps you have taken to remedy the situation. In the interest of the animal, and out of respect for our time as volunteers, please be truthful and succinct when responding. [For some insights into what we hear on a daily basis, please read a letter to relinquishers by a shelter worker.] We will offer advice that may resolve the issue; sometimes simply changing the placement of the litter box, or providing more vertical space in the home restores the happy relationship. However, occasionally there are circumstances that, in our opinion, warrant approval for intake of an owner-relinquished cat given that we have space at the time of the request or if the owner is willing to be put on a waiting list. In this case, we ask for a $100 donation per cat you are relinquishing to us to help cover the costs for food and veterinary care. Email our Feline Admissions Manager for more information.
